Whereas, a large proportion of Manitobans will experience mental health disorders in their lifetime (one in five Canadians experiences a mental disorder, with depression and anxiety being most common);

Whereas, a large number of Manitobans will experience stress related health issues, compromised employment and relationship disturbance for which psychological therapies are the treatment of choice;

Whereas, Manitobans continue to have difficulty accessing psychological services;

Whereas, the number of psychologists trained and practicing in the province of Manitoba has not been adequate to meet the needs of Manitobans;

Be it resolved that, the province of Manitoba will increase the number of psychologists trained in Manitoba Universities by:

  • increasing the number of funded Clinical Psychology Pre-Doctoral internship positions at Manitoba hospitals, from seven to twelve, by the year 2012, and
  • establishing a doctoral program in Clinical Health Psychology within the University of Manitoba

Be it further resolved that, the Province of Manitoba will increase the number of staffed psychologists providing direct service to Manitobans by a further twenty full time positions by the year 2012, one half of which will be providing service to children, and at minimum one half of which will be positioned in collaborative health care settings.
