    WORKSHOP 1 | October 28, 1:30 pm – 2:30 p.m.

A Taste of ACT: An Introduction to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Workshop

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy has been demonstrated as an effective intervention for a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, pain, substance use disorders and eating disorders. This introductory workshop on ACT provides information on how to conceptualize from an ACT perspective and some tools to help clients get out of their heads and start living. The workshop begins with a brief introduction to the functional contextualism and relational framework theory underpinnings of ACT, and how an understanding of these can aid therapy. The workshop then introduces the hexaflex and moves through each of these 6 processes, providing information flexible versus inflexible presentations and tools that can be sued to move a client towards flexibility in relation to that process.

    Learning Objectives
    – Understand the functional contextual underpinnings of ACT.
    – Be able to identify the 6 processes of psychological flexibility and inflexibility
    – Be able to conceptualize from an ACT perspective
Learn ACT tools that can be used in therapy (e.g., diffusion, present moment, metaphors).

    WORKSHOP 2 | November 4, 1:30 pm – 2:30 p.m.

    Body Diversity Training: Weight Bias

There has been increasing discussion and awareness about diversity and inclusion. However, diversity of shapes and sizes is often left out of such discussions. This workshop explores the different messages we have received about shape and size, how that has influenced us in creating potential biases in our practice, the potential impact of those biases and how to navigate them.

    Learning Objectives:
    – Describe what is weight bias, weight stigma and weight discrimination.
    – Understand the impact of weight stigma and discrimination on physical and psychological health
    – Build an awareness of one own’s weight bias.
    – Explore strategies of disengagement from weight bias and connecting with the client.

    WORKSHOP 3 | November 18, 1:30 pm – 2:30 p.m.

Breaking the Binds of Body Image Using ACT.

Body image struggles are so rampant that some have labeled them as endemic. Whether your client presents with body image issues, or something else, they are likely also to have body image issues that may be contributing to their struggles. “Breaking the Binds of Body Image” is an excellent workshop for people who work in the field of body image or those who aren’t sure what to do when these struggles enter the room. Breaking the Binds of Body Image applies ACT to body image struggles. It introduces different ways to help a person disengage from unhelpful body image traps and re-engage in their life.

    Learning Objectives:
    – Identify what body image is.
    – Be able to identify ACT processes involved in body image struggles.
    – Learn ACT interventions that could be used with clients struggling with body images.

    Target audience:
Clinical psychologists, social workers and other clinicians. Master/Doctoral students with some level of practical experience. Beginner-intermediate knowledge of ACT and/or conceptual behavioral science.
