{"id":3627,"date":"2018-03-21T00:55:11","date_gmt":"2018-03-21T04:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/sections\/hospitals\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T13:03:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T17:03:19","slug":"hospitals","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/fr\/sections\/hospitals\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychologists in Hospitals and Health Centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"textwrapleft\" style=\"float: left; padding: 10px;\" src=\"\/stockphotos\/HospitalsignM.jpg\" alt=\"Psychologists in Hospitals and Health Centers\" width=\"130\" height=\"130\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"display: inline-block;\">Chair: Lesley Graff<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:lgraff@hsc.mb.ca\">lgraff@hsc.mb.ca<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"display: inline-block;\">Mission:<\/h4>\n<p>The Psychologists in Hospitals and Health Centers Section will provide a forum for psychologists who are employed, practice, teach, or conduct research in hospitals and health care settings.<\/p>\n<p>In pursuance of this purpose, the Section:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>provides information to members about current activities, events, research and practice developments in the area;<\/li>\n<li>organizes sessions at the annual CPA Convention that are of interest to members;<\/li>\n<li>represents the interests of the Section within CPA through initiating such activities as position papers, guidelines, benchmarks, policy statements, and special meetings;<\/li>\n<li>makes representations, on behalf of its members to external organizations or agencies with the approval of the Executive Committee of the CPA Board of Directors;<\/li>\n<li>supports psychology leadership in their advocacy for administrative support for psychology practice and research;<\/li>\n<li>promotes standards of clinical service and practice-based research; and<\/li>\n<li>shares information among Canadian hospitals and health care settings regarding best practice services and the development and deployment of psychologists.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Recent Section Activities<\/h2>\n<p>The Section Executive are engaged in a number of advocacy efforts related to professional practice in publicly-funded health settings, in order to ensure robust access to specialist psychological care.<\/p>\n<h3>2025 CPA Conference in St. John&#8217;s, NL<\/h3>\n<article style=\"-webkit-column-width: 400px; -moz-column-width: 400px; column-width: 400px;\">\n<div style=\"margin-top: -15px;\">\n<div style=\"-webkit-column-break-inside: avoid; page-break-inside: avoid; break-inside: avoid;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Dr. Sheila Garland\u2019s Section invited speaker presentation on Assessing and Treating Insomnia<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 400px; border-radius: 30px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/docs\/File\/Sections\/Hospital\/PHHC featured speaker.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Sheila Garland\u2019s Section invited speaker presentation on Assessing and Treating Insomnia\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"-webkit-column-break-inside: avoid; page-break-inside: avoid; break-inside: avoid;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">Graduate Student Symposium<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"max-width: 400px; border-radius: 30px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/docs\/File\/Sections\/Hospital\/PHHC Grad Symopium, 2025.jpg\" alt=\"graduate student symposium\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: smaller;\">Left to Right: Madissen Sitka, \u00a0Aidan O\u2019Callahan (Section student rep), Lauren Currie, Graham Berlin<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<h3>Did you know&#8230;<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">Dr Sean Kidd and Dr Lesley Graff are co-chairing a national task force on health sector recruitment and retention, \u00a0in partnership with CPA, building on the second national think tank meeting co-led by the Section, and the ongoing national community of professional practice in health services meetings hosted by the Section.\u00a0 This task force was initiated in spring 2025 and includes members representing professional practice leads \u00a0across Canada, university clinical departments, trainees, CPAP, CCPPP and CPA executive. \u00a0\u00a0The task force is aiming for action oriented planning and practical solutions to move this critical national workforce agenda forward. A position paper with recommendations for action is set to be released in May 2026.<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">The Section, with Dr. Kerry Mothersill as guest editor, \u00a0led a special edition of <em>Psynopsis<\/em> \u00a0on innovations in psychological care and access in health settings.\u00a0 Dr. Kerry Mothersill is the guest editor. You can access the excellent articles in this informative edition here \u00a0( <a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/docs\/File\/Psynopsis\/2025-Vol47-3\/index.html#p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psynopsis 47.3 EVIDENCE-BASED PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTION AND ASSESSMENT: MENTAL HEALTH AND HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY APPLICATIONS<\/a>\u00a0 ,<\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\">Section student representative Aidan O\u2019Callahan (UBC) has organized a student-led, cross country virtual Residency Planning Q &amp; A session for <strong>May 12, 2026 at 1 pm CST\/2 pm EST<\/strong>. This session is for Canadian clinical graduate students at any level of training as it is never too early to prepare for residency.\u00a0 It features two current residents in hospital-based residencies (Edmonton; Ottawa).\u00a0 \u00a0Contact Aidan for information or to register\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:aidanoca@student.ubc.ca\">aidanoca@student.ubc.ca<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"padding-bottom: 6px;\"><em>Canadian Psychology<\/em> published an article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/docs\/File\/Sections\/Hospital\/Hudd-et-al-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imperative to recruit and retain psychologists in the health system (Hudd et al 2024)<\/a>, which was initiated and co-authored by several of the PHHC Section executive.\u00a0 The review and commentary offers solutions to strengthen the psychologist workforce in hospitals in order to improve access to mental health services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><!---<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cpa.ca\/fr\/etudiants\/studentawards\/#PHHC\">PHHC Section Student Awards Eligibility \u2013 2023<\/a><\/strong>---><\/p>\n<h2>Excellence in Hospital and Healthcare Psychology Award<\/h2>\n<h3>Recipients<\/h3>\n<article style=\"-webkit-column-width: 400px;
