Excellence in Hospital and Healthcare Psychology Award
This award recognizes an established psychologist who has made significant contributions to psychology in hospitals and health centres in Canada. The nominee should be 10 or more years since receiving their doctoral degree in clinical, counselling or neuropsychology. The individual being nominated does not have to be a member of the PHHC Section; the nominator will be a member of the Section. An individual can only receive the award once; subsequent nominations would not be able to be considered.
The nomination includes a current curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee and a nomination letter from an individual or individuals familiar with the nominee’s contributions. The nomination letter will describe, in addition to exemplary service, how the nominee has contributed to psychology in hospitals and health centres in one or more of the following ways:
- Significance of contributions to psychology as a profession
- Impact of contributions on patient access to psychological services
- Impact of contributions on the hiring and retention of psychologists.
Nominees who do not receive the award in a given year can be carried forward for consideration the following year.
The call for nominations typically goes out in February with a due date of early May for submission of the nomination letter and CV to the Section’s Past Chair.
Bob McIlwraith Early Career Award
This award recognizes an early career psychologist employed in a publicly funded hospital or health centre setting who exemplifies leadership in the practice of psychology in the organization. The nominee should be less than 10 years since receiving their doctoral degree in clinical, counseling or neuropsychology and have demonstrated early contributions in psychology leadership (practice, administration, training, or research) within hospitals or health centre settings. The individual being nominated does not have to be a member of the PHHC Section; the nominator will be a member of the Section. An individual can only receive the award once; subsequent nominations would not be able to be considered.
The nomination includes a current curriculum vitae (CV) of the nominee and a nomination letter from an individual or individuals familiar with the nominee’s contributions. The nomination letter will describe, in addition to exemplary service, the candidate’s emerging contributions in promoting/leading the practice (intervention, assessment, consultation, training, research) of psychology within their organization.
Nominees who do not receive the award in a given year can be carried forward for consideration the following year.

*Bob McIlwraith (1951-2021) was instrumental in the establishment of the CPA Section of Psychologists in Hospitals and Health Centres (PHHC) and served as one of the early Section Presidents. He provided leadership with the Canadian Psychological Association in numerous capacities, including as a member of and chair of the Accreditation Panel for Doctoral Programs and Internships, a frequent accreditation site visitor and trainer of site visitors, and as a founder of the Rural and Northern Psychology Section. Bob worked his entire career as a hospital psychologist based at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, serving many roles, including Residency Training Director and Department Head. He was a passionate advocate for psychological services and access in the health system. Bob was a generous mentor for residents and early career psychologists and was genuinely delighted to facilitate the professional development of his colleagues.
PHHC Section Best Student Research Presentation Award
The PHHC Section Best Student Research Presentation Award ($300) | La Bourse de la meilleure présentation de recherche étudiante de la section PHHC (300 $)

Information: An award for a PHHC Section student member who delivers the best research presentation at the CPA annual convention (either a poster or oral presentation). The winner will be determined by the Executive Committee at the annual CPA convention.

- Be presenting author on a poster or oral presentation accepted by the PHHC Section for the CPA annual convention

All students who meet the above criteria can be considered for this award; they are asked to contact the PHHC Section Student Representative phhcstudentscpa@gmail.com to confirm their student status and provide their email contact information at least a month before the CPA conference.

The scoring Rubric considers data collection (with new data, rather than for example, a review or secondary data analysis, ranked higher), students’ level of involvement in the work, originality/novelty of the research, relevance to PHHC Section, presentation/poster quality, and quality of delivery of the oral/poster presentation. PHHC Section Student Travel Award
The PHHC Section Student Travel Award ($250 each) | La Bourse de Voyage Étudiante de la Section PHHC (250 $ chacun)

Information: The PHHC Section Travel Award was designed to help PHHC section students from across Canada travel to the annual convention of the Canadian Psychological Association. All student section members who have posters or oral presentations accepted by the PHHC Section can be considered. This award is separate from the travel bursaries granted by CPA to students traveling long distances.

Award recipients will receive the funding after the conference and may need to provide travel receipts.
