Nominee Statement for Steven Smith seeking the Director at Large Position
Dr. Steven Smith is a Professor of Psychology at Saint Mary’s University (SMU). Having grown up in Montreal, Steve is bilingual. After completing a BA in 1995 at Bishop’s, he completed his Master’s (1997) and PhD (2000) in Social Psychology from Queen’s. At SMU he has served as Associate Vice-President Academic & Enrolment Management, Dean of Science, Associate Dean, and University Registrar. Steve’s research covers a broad range of topics, including forensic psychology (eyewitness evidence, confessions, and how people understand their legal rights), health promotion (alcohol and food labelling, cannabis use), bias against people with criminal records (particularly Black and Indigenous applicants), post- secondary student success, and EDIA issues in post-secondary education and organizations. Steve’s research has been funded by SSHRC, CIHR, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the New Frontiers in Research Fund, MITACS, Research Nova Scotia, and other public and private funding agencies. In 2019 Steve was awarded the Lawrence Hood Lifetime Service Award for Major Contributions to Students by the SMU Student Association. Steve has served on and Chaired numerous funding agency review committees (primarily with SSHRC). He also has over 15 years of experience serving on and Chairing volunteer Boards, as well as an extensive history of working in and developing effective partnerships both internal to the university with provincial and national partners, and with industry and government. Steve currently serves on CPA’s Education and Training Committee and has previously served as Chair and Conference Coordinator of CPA’s Social and Personality Section.
