Educational and School Psychology Section: Advocacy and Outreach Resources

Webinar Recording: Career Path Navigation: How to Become a School Psychologist. Tips and Tricks from those in the Profession

A panel of graduate students and school psychology practitioners and academics will provide valuable information on a variety of exciting careers in school psychology, the academic path and requirements, and the promising job prospects in this field.

The Educational and School Psychology Section of the CPA would like to make advocacy and reaching out easier. During Psychology Month 2022, we are happy to share with you several tools for outreach aiming to provide information about the field of school psychology to general audiences, but with a special focus on undergraduate and high school students.

What are we sharing?

  1. A slide deck for a PP presentation titled What is School Psychology – A career that makes a difference (for undergraduate students) (PowerPoint PPTX or PDF) to be used for undergraduate students to encourage them to consider school psychology as a potential future career.
(version française: PowerPoint PPTX or PDF)
  2. A slide deck for a PP presentation titled What is School Psychology – A career that makes a difference (for secondary school students) (PowerPoint PPTX or PDF) to be used for high school students to encourage them to consider school psychology as a potential future career.
(version française: PowerPoint PPTX or PDF)
  3. A poster describing graduate programs in school psychology in Canada to accompany the PP presentations. PDF
(version française: Études en français – programmes de psychologie au CanadaPowerPoint PPTX or PDF)
  4. A 2-minute animation titled Who are School Psychologists describing what school psychologists are doing (to be used either together with the PP presentations or separately). https://youtu.be/Tf6Osk51PgA

Who can use the resources?

If you are a school psychologist, or you are teaching or studying in a school psychology graduate program, and have access to undergraduate and/or high school students, or other groups in your community (parents, educators, etc.), you can use these resources to reach out. To help us track outreach efforts, please fill out a quick form online after each presentation at https://forms.gle/v6CApLnXGaJqbPiMA

Why is student outreach needed?

For the past several decades, the field of school psychology has been struggling with a chronic shortage of qualified school psychologists. Although there are many reasons for this shortage, one way of trying to increase the numbers is to familiarize students with school psychology as a potential career choice.
