In this workshop, Dr. Ross will describe strategies and techniques for working with hostile and destructive parts of self. These often take the form of auditory hallucinations or voices. Dr. Ross will also describe the key features of hostile and destructive voices and how to ask about them in a clinical interview. The differences and similarities between psychotic and dissociative voices will be explained as well as the differences between a DSM-5 based and a transdiagnostic approach to hostile, destructive voices, and the inner child spectrum.
The second part of the workshop will be spent on treatment. Principles of the therapy include: the central paradox of DID; the problem of host resistance; and talking through to the voices. Time will be spent on techniques for fostering inter-personality communication and cooperation, grounding, stabilization and other tasks. Techniques and strategies will be illustrated through case examples. The terms parts of self, voices and personality or identity states will be used inter-changeably throughout this workshop.
