CPA Policy Statement: Dr. J. Philippe Rushton

The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) affirms that the late Dr. J. Philippe Rushton consistently misinterpreted and misrepresented psychological and genetic research on race and intelligence. Much of his work, framed as scientific inquiry, advanced racist assumptions, relied on flawed methodology, ignored, and violated established ethical standards, and contributed—and continues to contribute—to ongoing harm experienced by Black and other racialized communities. The continued dissemination and representation of his publications by white supremacist and eugenic movements underscores the enduring damage caused by his body of work (1). The CPA also recognizes that Dr. Rushton received honours for his earlier work, including a CPA Fellowship. This historic association with the CPA has been hurtful to those in the psychology community and the greater public. The CPA formally rejects Dr. Rushton’s writings, statements, and actions with respect to race and racialized groups. His work does not reflect the established scientific evidence, recognized ethical standards, or values of the CPA. The CPA affirms its commitment to advancing psychological science that upholds human dignity, equity, and empirical integrity.
