This Code articulates ethical principles, values, and standards to guide all members of the Canadian Psychological Association, whether scientists, practitioners, or scientist practitioners, or whether acting in a research, direct service, teaching, student, trainee, administrative, management, employer, employee, supervisory, consultative, peer review, editorial, expert witness, social policy, or any other role related to the discipline of psychology.

For more information about how the Fourth Edition differs from the previous version of the Code, please see Dr. Carole Sinclair’s article on pp. 36-37 of the Winter 2017 issue of Psynopsis.

Please note that the Companion Manual to the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists and CPA’s web-based course “Being an Ethical Psychologist” are now being revised to reflect the changes in the Fourth Edition. However, the current versions of each of these will remain available until the updated versions are released.

Guidelines for the Use of Educational and Psychological Tests

CPA does not have guidelines but recommends the use of the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing approved by the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Council on Measurement in Education. Please visit the APA web site.

Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals in Research

CPA produced one of the first set of guidelines on animal care and research in the early 1980’s. Organizations such as the Canadian Council on Animal Care have been created since. Please visit http://www.ccac.ca for more information.

The CPA document, Guidelines for Educational and Psychological Testing, was published in 1987 and is no longer current. Until such time as this document is updated, the Board of Directors recommends that the following publication be used in its place.
